Wrexham to Introduce Glass-Floor Viewing Experience at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct!

Updated: Apr 4

***APRIL FOOL***

Visitors to the iconic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct could soon experience part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site like never before, as plans are unveiled for a new glass-floor viewing section suspended 38 metres above the River Dee.

The proposed enhancement, developed in partnership with leading structural engineers and heritage specialists in Wales, would see a carefully designed stretch of the aqueduct’s towpath in Trevor replaced with reinforced transparent panels. The installation, scheduled for 2027 aims to offer visitors a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape, allowing them to look directly down into the Dee Valley below.

The initiative forms part of a wider effort by This is Wrecsam and the World Heritage Site Visitor Management Group to further strengthen Wrexham’s position as a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists, combining world-class heritage with innovative visitor experiences.

A spokesperson for the project said:

"The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is already one of the most remarkable feats of engineering in the world. This new feature will allow visitors to engage with its scale and setting in a completely new and unforgettable way."

The design has been developed with sensitivity to the aqueduct’s historic significance, ensuring that all additions are reversible and in keeping with its status as a protected site. Safety and accessibility have also been central to the plans, with the glass panels engineered to the highest modern standards by the same engineers behind 'the edge' observation deck in New York city.

Pending final approvals and planning consent from Wrexham County Borough Council, the glass-floor section could be introduced as part of a pilot experience within 12-months, with visitor feedback helping to shape any future expansion as part of the ongoing plans to lengthen the visitor dwell time at the site.

Further details, including potential opening dates are expected to be announced by the Pontcysyllte Visitor Management group in the coming months.
