Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum

The Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum share a historic home on Regent Street in Wrexham city centre. Opened in September 2026, the new national football museum tells the story of the game in Wales in the city where the Football Association of Wales was founded, alongside galleries on Wrexham's own history. Entry is free, with timed tickets booked online here.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The museum is housed in a Grade II listed Tudor Gothic building, built in 1857 as a barracks for the Royal Denbighshire Militia. It later became a police station and magistrates' court known as County Buildings, and has been home to Wrexham Museum since 1996.

A major redevelopment, backed by the Welsh Government and Wrexham County Borough Council, has turned it into a museum of two halves. One half is the Football Museum of Wales, custodian of the Welsh Football Collection. The other is Wrexham Museum, telling the story of the county from its earliest people to its industries. The museum is run by Wrexham County Borough Council.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

  • Our Wrexham Story: galleries on the county from prehistory to the present day, with interactive digital displays and immersive film, including Brymbo Man, a Bronze Age burial found in the county.

  • Courtyard Café (Caffi'r Cowrt): drinks and food in the museum courtyard.

  • Museum shop: gifts and souvenirs on site.

WHY VISIT

Wrexham is where organised football in Wales began, and this is the national museum telling that story. Football fans can trace the national game from its roots to the present day, while the Wrexham galleries give a fuller picture of the city beyond the pitch. It sits right in the city centre, a short walk from the Racecourse Ground, which makes it an easy stop before a match or as part of a day exploring Wrexham.

GETTING THERE

The museum is on Regent Street in Wrexham city centre. Wrexham bus station and Wrexham Central station are both a couple of minutes' walk away, and Wrexham General station is around five minutes on foot. Several council car parks are within easy walking distance.

The museum is one of eight stops on the Wrexham Attractions trail. On match days, pair it with a game at the Racecourse Ground, home of Wrexham AFC, a short walk away.
