Best pubs in and around Wrexham

The best pubs in Wrexham: an award winning brewery tap, a 16th century thatched inn, match day locals, cocktail bars and riverside country pubs.

Bar at The Buck, Bangor on Dee

Wrexham has always been a drinking town: it brewed Britain’s early lagers, the Football Association of Wales was founded in one of its hotels and the football club was born in a pub. Today you can drink in a 16th century thatched inn, an award winning brewery tap, a restored bank or a riverside country pub. Here are the best pubs in and around Wrexham, starting with our members.

CITY CENTRE PUBS AND BARS

  • Magic Dragon Brewery Tap on Charles Street: the taproom of a brewery in the county, pouring its own cask and keg ales, with live music. It has been named CAMRA Pub of the Year for the Dee Valley, North Wales and Wales.

  • Hill St Social on Hill Street: a friendly local where newcomers are made welcome.

  • Vault33 on High Street: a stylish bar in a restored former bank, part owned by former Wrexham striker Neil Roberts, with live sport and music.

  • Effie’s on High Street: cocktails and live music every Friday and Saturday.

  • The Bank on High Street: a wine bar with more than 20 wines by the glass and small plates.

HISTORIC PUBS TO SEEK OUT

  • The Horse and Jockey on Hope Street: a Grade II listed pub, possibly 16th century, and the only thatched building left in Wrexham.

MATCH DAY PUBS

  • Wrexham Lager Club on Union Road: a short walk from the ground, with two bars and good value.

  • Maesgwyn Hall on Mold Road: close to the Racecourse and popular for food and drinks on match days.

See our matchday guide for tickets and travel.
