Day trips from Wrexham

The best day trips from Wrexham: Chester by train, Llangollen and the Dee Valley, Chirk and the Ceiriog Valley, Eryri, Anglesey and Conwy, and Liverpool.

Wrexham makes a great base for exploring north east Wales and the border. Chester is 20 minutes away by train, Llangollen and the Dee Valley are on the doorstep, and the mountains of Eryri are within a day’s reach. Here are the best day trips, with local guides who can take you there.

CHESTER

Chester is about 12 miles north, around 20 minutes by train from Wrexham General, with trains about every 30 minutes. It has the most complete circuit of Roman and medieval walls in Britain (about two miles, roughly an hour on foot), the medieval Rows shopping galleries, a red sandstone cathedral and Chester Zoo just outside the centre.

Our members Tour Guide Katie and Pete Evans are Green Badge guides for Chester as well as North Wales, and Chester and North Wales Multilingual Tours guides in English, French, Spanish and Italian.

LLANGOLLEN AND THE DEE VALLEY

Llangollen is around 20 minutes’ drive south west, past the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Ride the Llangollen Railway, a preserved steam line along the Dee Valley to Corwen; walk the river to Telford’s Horseshoe Falls; visit Plas Newydd, home of the Ladies of Llangollen; or climb to the ruins of Castell Dinas Brân for views over the valley. Llangollen has no mainline station, so go by car, bus or with a guide.

CHIRK AND THE CEIRIOG VALLEY

Closer to home, Chirk Castle sits above the Ceiriog Valley, with Caffi Wylfa in the village for lunch. Head up the valley to The Hand at Llanarmon, a country inn with walks into the Berwyn mountains from the door.

ERYRI, ANGLESEY AND CONWY

For the mountains and the coast, Pure Wales runs scheduled small group and private tours with local driver guides, from half day tours in Wrexham to journeys through Eryri, Anglesey and Conwy.

LIVERPOOL

Take the Borderlands line from Wrexham Central to Bidston and change for Merseyrail into Liverpool, for the waterfront, museums and Beatles heritage. See getting to and around Wrexham.

LET SOMEONE ELSE DRIVE

Wrexham Chauffeurs runs private tours across North Wales, Cheshire and beyond in executive cars. See all our guided tours.
