Rackery Farm Shop on the Straight Mile, Llay, Wrexham
Wrexham sits between the Welsh hills and the Cheshire plain, and its farms, bakers and makers produce plenty worth taking home. Here’s where to buy local food and drink, from a farm shop with its own café and dog paddock to a village bread school, a city centre market hall and the county’s own lager and mead.
FARM SHOPS
Rackery Farm Shop on the Straight Mile in Llay is run by Larissa and Jake. The shop sells local and Welsh produce, meats, cheeses, bakes and gifts, and the café serves breakfast, lunch and homemade treats. There’s also a nature trail, a play area and the Rackery Run, a secure dog paddock you can book in 30 or 55 minute sessions. Its sister venue, Rackery Retreat, has luxury glamping nearby.
BREAD AND BAKING
Ma Baker at 18 High Street, Overton-on-Dee, is a bakery and bread school run by Liz Wilson, who hand crafts every loaf with British organic flour and was runner up in the Home Baker category of the World Bread Awards. Order bread on click and collect, or book a class, from Introduction to Bread and Sourdough to Italian and Artisan Bread.
MARKETS AND INDEPENDENT TRADERS
Tŷ Pawb on Market Street has a market hall with more than 30 independent traders, a food court and a gallery shop, open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Each trader sets its own hours. It also hosts makers markets: see our Christmas guide for the Christmas Makers Market.
LOCAL DRINKS TO TAKE HOME
Wrexham Lager: the brewery shop on St George’s Crescent sells bottles, crates, kegs, glassware and gifts.
Stone Circle Mead: oak aged mead made from Welsh honey, sold at the meadery and online.
Magic Dragon Brewery Tap: ales brewed in the county, in the taproom on Charles Street.
