Colourful Xplore! sign at the science discovery centre in Wrexham

Wrexham is a good place for a family day out, rain or shine: hands on science in the city centre, sheep to meet, castles and country estates to run around, country parks with farm animals, and campsites with lakes and paddle boards. Here are the best things to do with children, starting with our members.

WHEN IT’S RAINING

  • Xplore! in the city centre: more than 85 interactive science exhibits, a live science show and a planetarium.

  • Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum on Regent Street: free entry with a timed ticket, and plenty for young football fans.

  • Tŷ Pawb: free galleries, markets and a food court under one roof.

  • Waterworld on Holt Street: the city’s leisure centre, with a swimming pool, rapids and a 65 metre flume, and free parking.

ANIMALS AND FARMS

  • Felting With Ewe in Rossett: meet a flock of Zwartbles sheep on a family run organic farm and needle felt your own woolly sheep to take home.

  • Rackery Farm Shop on the Straight Mile in Llay: a farm café, local food and space to explore.

  • Tŷ Mawr Country Park near Cefn Mawr: sheep, pigs, goats and two llamas to meet, chickens and ducks to feed, a play area, a café and a walk to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Parking is £1 a day.

CASTLES AND COUNTRY ESTATES

  • Erddig: a National Trust house two miles from the city, with a 1,200 acre estate to explore.

  • Chirk Castle: a 13th century Marcher fortress with 480 acres of parkland, about seven miles south of the city.

Both run family events through the year, from Easter trails to Christmas grottos. See our Christmas guide for this season.

PLAYGROUNDS AND COUNTRY PARKS

Alyn Waters Country Park is the largest country park in the area, with a children’s playground on the Llay side, a visitor centre, short waymarked walks, a cycleway and a sculpture trail. Caffi Cyfle, our member café, is on the Gwersyllt side. Parking is £1 a day.

ACTIVE DAYS OUT

  • Clays Golf just outside the city: Just Your Putter adventure putting for families and beginners, and a floodlit driving range with Toptracer that tracks every shot.

  • Acorn Commonwood in Holt: 60 acres of lakes and woodland with fishing, paddle boarding, laser tag and camping.

  • The Plassey in Eyton: a holiday park with an indoor pool, a nine hole golf course and more than 20 independent shops.

  • Minera Lead Mines: restored engine houses and mine ruins in a free country park, good for a walk with older children.
